How UK Crypto Tax Works
Learn about Capital Gains Tax on cryptocurrency, the £3,000 allowance, and HMRC reporting requirements.
HMRC's approach to cryptocurrency
HMRC does not treat cryptocurrency as currency, it treats it as an asset, similar to shares. This means most crypto activity falls under Capital Gains Tax (CGT) rules rather than being exempt like foreign currency gains often are. Since 2024, the CGT annual exempt amount has fallen sharply (from £12,300 in 2022/23 to £3,000 from 2024/25 onwards), meaning far more crypto investors now have a reporting obligation than in previous years.
If you receive crypto as payment for work, through mining, or via staking rewards, that portion is instead taxed as income at your marginal Income Tax rate at the point you receive it — any later gain or loss when you eventually sell is then a separate CGT event.
Which crypto transactions are taxable?
Keeping accurate records
HMRC expects you to keep records of every transaction, date, type of crypto, amount, value in GBP at the time, and any fees, for at least 5 years after the relevant tax return deadline. If you trade across multiple exchanges, using dedicated crypto tax software to consolidate your history is usually far more reliable than manual tracking, especially once you have more than a handful of transactions.

Worked example: selling crypto for a profit
You bought crypto for £10,000 and sold it for £18,000, so the gain is £8,000. With a £3,000 annual exempt amount, £5,000 is taxable. At 18% (basic-rate band) that is £900. If the gain falls in the higher-rate band at 24%, it is £1,200.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is swapping one coin for another taxable?
Yes. Exchanging one crypto asset for another is a disposal for Capital Gains Tax, valued in pounds at the time of the swap.
What are the matching rules?
Same-day and 30-day rules are applied first, then the rest comes from a Section 104 pool that holds an average cost. This is why keeping complete records matters.
Can I claim losses?
Yes, if you report them to HMRC. Losses can be set against gains and carried forward.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the crypto tax-free allowance for 2026/27?
The annual exempt amount for Capital Gains Tax is £3,000 for 2026/27. Only gains above this threshold are taxable.
How is crypto taxed in the UK?
HMRC treats cryptocurrency as property (not currency). You pay Capital Gains Tax (18% or 24%) when you sell, exchange, or gift crypto. Income Tax applies if you receive crypto as payment or from mining/staking.
What counts as a taxable crypto transaction?
Selling crypto for GBP, exchanging one crypto for another, using crypto to buy goods/services, and gifting crypto (except to spouses) are all taxable events.
Do I need to report crypto losses?
Yes! Report losses to HMRC. They can offset gains in the same year or carry forward to future years, reducing your overall tax bill.
Key Terms Explained
Plain-English definitions of the financial terms used in this calculator.
